To kick off the 10-year anniversary of the Women In The World summit, the event called upon one of the worldís most powerful women to deliver the keynote speech: Oprah Winfrey. Taking to the stage at New Yorkís Lincoln Center on April 10, the media mogul delivered an inspirational message to the crowd. ìWe live in a country that has somehow confused cruel with funny, serious with intelligent, attitude with belief, personal freedom with stockpiling assault weapons, and what is moral with what is legal,î she said. ìSo, it is time for women in the world to set the agenda. Itís time for women to redefine the message. We need to make that message a positive one. Letís make it ambitious, and inclusive, and brimming with hope.î
The three-day event ñ founded by former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown ñ has been tasked with answering one question: can women save the world? If Winfrey has anything to do with it then, yes, we will if we continue to ìrock the boatî. ìAnd then when the smoke clears and all the naysayers who said it couldnít be done settle down, we need to reinvent the game,î she continued. ìI donít need to tell any of you that the game was not built on an even playing field. We prove ourselves, again and again and again, and we maintain a healthy skepticism, but we refuse to become cynical.î
